How is our social landscape shaped by the media we consume and what can we learn about how we’ve changed by looking at past narratives? How can we, as filmmakers and actors, responsibly create stories that reflect our times while promoting positive change within the industry?

Popo Fan
Popo Fan is a Berlin-based filmmaker, writer and curator from China. His queer documentaries “Chinese Closet”, “Mama Rainbow” and “Papa Rainbow” on family issues in China have made a notable impact on Chinese society. From 2016, he has concentrated on scripted, sex-positive shorts. He has served as an organiser for the Beijing Queer Film Festival for more than a decade, and is also the founder of Queer University Video Training Camp. Additionally, he participated in Berlinale Talents 2017 and was a jury member of the Teddy Award in 2019.

Ygor Gama 

After award-winning short films such as LEAVING in 2012, Ygor Gama directed #YA, which was nominated for the Crystal Bear at the Berlinale Film Festival and honoured by international film prizes, as well as in Deutsch Welle and ARTE. As alumni of IDFA DocLab in the Netherlands, he researched VR technology and New Media Art. In 2018-2020, he was the video artist for Maqamat Dance Theatre in Lebanon, a leading voice of contemporary dance in the Arab world. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Selection Committee for the Generation Program at the Berlinale Int. Film Festival. In 2020, he was a member of the Jury at the 36th Warsaw Film Festival.

Abigail Hutchinson 

Abi is a West-Indian American filmmaker, writer, and occasional makeup artist currently based in Berlin. After earning a BBA in Supply Chain Management from Howard University and going to a life-changing BTS concert she decided to delve into her then neglected creative passions. While she is experimenting with her artistic signature, representing the complex BIOPIC feminine experience and exploring cultural anthropology through food are her main muses. She is currently completing her first year of the Film Production degree at Catalyst.

Jon-Carlos Evans
Jon-Carlos is a Berlin based filmmaker, audiovisual artist and writer. He holds a B.A. in Film Production from Webster University-St.Louis and a MFA in Media Arts Production from the City College of New York. Under his musical alias Klaas von Karlos, Evans is also is the founder of experimental-electronic collective ReVerse Bullets and creative director of the GLITCH performance series/music label. As Klaas von Karlos, he is also a member of music projects BIINDS, Naked Sweatshop, and Divan Rouge. He is the Programme Lead for the Creative Production-Film MA at Catalyst Institute for Creative & Technological Arts in Berlin.
